DRINK: Asshole Boyfriend

The first thing that caught my eye about the drink was it's cheeky name. As a twenty-two year-old female, I've had my fair share of asshole boyfriends, and to find a drink with that name and the motto 'if you got 'em, drink 'em' amused me to no end.

Assembling the actual drink is easy: glass, ice, one, splash, one, two, and stir to mix. No shaking, no blender; just a quick throw together. Which I'm sure when you're drunk and at a party is a godsent- not that I would know.

When it comes to taste it reminds me a bit of cough syrup, but I'm finding that, that is fairly common for drinks involving energy drinks and vodka (first time I ever tried the pair I could only handle a few sips before I had to throw it out). On the plus side the cranberry and ginger ale actually make it a bit smoother and easier to drink.

Looks wise there isn't anything special, the cranberry makes it look red, but it isn't as pretty as a cosmo and some martini drinks, but if you're serving them to guys that could be a good thing.

The Asshole Boyfriend would make it onto my short list for a party though, because as I said it's an easy drink to make and appeals to both girls and guys. Although I won't be reaching for this at home, I'll save the fruity, girly drinks for that.

I ordered sake on a whim while having lunch with my mother at a local Chinese restaurant on a whim, not my best idea. Sake on first taste, tastes like what it is a very mild wine. By the third it reminds you of a very smooth vodka, and at the end you're cringing.

Ordering sake had not been my best idea by far, and I won't be ordering hot sake again, that's for sure.

L.A. Candy is the debut novel by former Hills star Lauren Conrad. In her first attempt at fiction Conrad tells the story of Jane Roberts, who's just moved to Los Angeles with her BFF Scarlett Harp (a USC student) to intern with event planner Fiona Chen.

While out clubbing Jane and Scarlett are approached by a producer to star in a new PopTV reality show, later titled L.A. Candy. From there the book quickly picks up and follows Jane and Scarlett (as well as the producer, shady co-star, a head at a gossip rag, and Jane's new sleezy boyfriend).

L.A. Candy seems too read more like Conrad's own personal experiences on The Hills and Laguna Beach. Lead girl Jane (ie Conrad), juggles a crush (Braden) and his best friend, the slutty Jesse Edwards, as well as a two-faced cast mate (read Montag) who leaks photos of Jane and Braden hooking up to a gossip rag, aptly titled Gossip, and a boss that seems to be promoting her simply because of her new public image.

By the end you've pretty much pegged which character was what cast member, but there is more than enough differences to keep the story interesting.

If you're a fan of Conrad's The Hills then L.A. Candy is the summer read for you.
